Jujutsu Kaizen Anime: Is It Overhyped?

A Shounen battle series with all the tropes that come with its genre.

A story that follows an exceptionally overpowered protagonist who is simple-minded, lovable, and has a high fight-IQ. Oh, and he is a part of a trio who fights evil spirits, one of which has possessed him and threatens to take over his body. Does this sound interesting? For those who say yes, then Jujutsu Kaizen is the series to check out.

Jujutsu Kaisen is a Japanese manga series from the author Gege Akutami and has been serialized since March 2018 in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump. The main protagonist is Yuji Itadori, a high school student. Through various circumstances, he becomes a vessel for Ryomen Sukuna, the “king of curses.” After which he becomes a Jujutsu sorcerer for an organization whose task is to exorcise evil spirits known as “curses.” These curses are born from cursed energy, which is created through negative emotions.

As is evident with the aforementioned, this series holds a lot of clichés that are common within various other Shōnen. Here are a few of the checkmarks that this series covers for a typical Shōnen: Borderline dumb main character, has tremendous strength even before powers are introduced, above-average fight intelligence, and a demon within them who threatens to take over.

These are just characteristics of the main protagonist. Of course, the main cast follows the two guy and one girl trio that is often utilized. The other male is both highly intelligent and comparably strong to the main character.

Though this series follows those major story beats that are prevalent in countless other Shōnen, there is a reason for it. This story structure is tried and true. For each cliché in this series, there are often fresh new takes on them through backstories and abilities. Not to mention the action sequences are beautifully animated with smooth movement and eye-pleasing visuals. The songs for the openings and endings work well for the mood and fit quite nicely. Various content creators state that this is the best Shōnen of this generation.

Overall, is this series overhyped? Yes, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Overhyping a series can have negative effects by turning off potential views or readers. However, the same is also true for bringing attention to a great series. The show does have a bit of an exposition-heavy start, which slows down the pace a bit. Though, the series begins to pick up speed and is ultimately very enjoyable for fans of nearly all genres of anime or manga.
